This Preview Thursday, you won’t want to miss two amazing shows that celebrate not only the work of the participating artists, but also our community. These exhibitions are collaborative in the nature of their development–local galleries partnering with other organizations to share the work of local artists with Las Vegas.
Brett Wesley Gallery’s first show of the new year is Picture This, a group show featuring photography and mixed media works by fourth year UNLV art and photography students. Through their work, these emerging artists explore contemporary photography, vintage processing, and printmaking. Brett Wesley Gallery Director Victoria Hart says that the gallery is pleased to “support the students and the work they’re doing” by exhibiting Picture This. The students are all a part of Professor Pasha Rafat’s class that seeks to familiarize students with various techniques in photography and printmaking and their relationship to other artforms such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, and design.
The gallery will hold an opening and artist reception Thursday, January 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. The artists will also be at the gallery during First Friday festivities. Picture This will be on display through January 28th.
Across the street at the highly-regarded Trifecta Gallery inside The Arts Factory, Parade: The Collective is on display for the seventh year. It’s a group exhibition of work created by employees of Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas resident shows. Through Parade, Cirque du Soleil supports their employees’ artistic pursuits and cultural life outside of the work they do within the company.
Says Marty Walsh, owner of Trifecta, “What speaks to me is that Cirque hires creative people for their creativity. But those same people often don’t have the opportunity to do their own studio practice.” Trifecta’s partnership with Cirque and ongoing annual Parade exhibition highlights one of Walsh’s principles upon which she operates Trifecta: no one is an island—we’re all a community and together we are stronger.
Parade opens on January 5th and runs through January 26th.
